Additional notes regarding the technical specifiaction of BMW R1200GS:
- The fuel efficiency (shown as fuel consumption above) shows how efficient is a certain motorcycle in converting the chemical energy of the fuel into kinetic energy. It is usually measured by how many liters are needed to travel 100 kilometers (L/100km) or by what distance in miles can be traveled with one gallon of fuel (mpg). In the average case BMW R1200GS will burn 5.60 liters on every 100km of your trip. That is based on the technical specifications of the motorcycle and may vary depending on several factors as style of riding, temperature, road condition etc. As per the MPG number it will run for 42 miles while burning one gallon of fuel. If we know that BMW R1200GS has a fuel tank capacity of 20.0 liters and its fuel economy is 42mpg (based on the technical specifications data above) then we can calculate the run it can achieve with a topped up tank and it is 221 miles.
- 1170 cc engine size (displacement) - this is the total volume enclosed in the movement of all pistons in the engine cylinders from their bottom to their top position in a stroke. In the common case the bigger the displacement volume the more powerful the engine and lesser fuel economy. As per the specification table here the displacement volume of the BMW R1200GS engine is 1170 cc. It is specified in cubic centimeters (cc) or liters.
- 185 mm ground clearance - means that the shortest distance between the ground (considering it is flat) and the chassis of R1200GS is 185 mm. Usually off-road bikes have higher ground clearance while sport bikes have lower ground clearance.Bore and stroke of BMW R1200GS engine
- 101x73 bore and stroke - this is a term concerning the engine parameters describing the ratio between cylinder bore diameter and piston stroke. If bore and stroke have equal measures then the engine is called square. According to the technical specifications of BMW R1200GS its bore is 101 mm and the stroke is 73 mm. For this particular BMW engine bore is bigger than stroke meaning that R1200GS has a short stroke engine.
- 12:1 compression ratio is a value that represents the ratio of the volume of gas in the cylinder when the piston is at the lowest point it is ever gonna go down and the volume of gas when the piston is at its highest point. Premium fuel might be recommended for some motorcycles with high levels of compression ration in order to avoid engine knocking. If you got a motorcycle with a greater compression ratio for its specific engine it is getting better fuel economy than it would if it had a lesser compression ratio.
- Shaft final drive: Depending on the purpose of the motorcycle and its characteristics usually one among the three possible final drive options is preferred. On sport bikes the chain drive is preferred while most cruisers and touring bikes tend to be designed with belt or shaft drive. All of them are workable technologies and have proved that over the years. The final drive of BMW R1200GS is shaft.
shaft driven motorcycleMainly used with power cruisers and touring bikes, the shaft drives provide smooth way to deliver power to the rear wheel. Shaft drives are quiet, clean and don't really need much care, except changing their oil after gaining certain amount of miles on the odometer. However shaft drives are more expensive, heavier and since they have some extra gears moving inside some small amount of power is inevitably lost.
- Air and liquid cooling system: motorcycle engines can be air cooled or liquid cooled and they both have their advantages. The new concept of combined air and liquid cooling provide efficient temperature range for optimal performance of the engine at all times.BMW R1200GS turn signals - replacement
- Replacing BMW R1200GS turn signals is an easy job and commonly considered a do it yourself project. Disconnecting the wires of the motorcycle turn signals is not a hassle as usually they are color coded. It could be as simple as disconnecting both the male and female ends if box connection is used. Complete the installation of the new BMW R1200GS turn signals by properly connecting the wires after they are securely mounted.Picture of BMW R1200GS cover
Since the dimensions of the BMW R1200GS are given in the specs that would help you get the right size motorcycle cover. If any additional aftermarket accessories have been installed on the bike they may have an effect on the dimensions. A larger cover will be needed if the motorcycle has an additional backrest, sissy bar or panniers fitted.
