Additional notes regarding the technical specifiaction of BMW K1200S:
- The fuel consumption (fuel economy) of a motorcycle shows either the mileage that can be achieved with a certain amount of fuel (mpg) or the amount of fuel needed to cover certain mileage (L/100km). In the average case BMW K1200S will burn 5.60 liters on every 100km of your trip. That is based on the technical specifications of the motorcycle and may vary depending on several factors as style of riding, temperature, road condition etc. As per the MPG number it will run for 42 miles while burning one gallon of fuel. Taken into consideration that it has a 19.0 liters (or 5 gallons)s fuel tank capacity it can be calculated that BMW K1200S can run 339 kilometers or 210 miles with a full fuel tank.
- Engine size (displacement ) of 1157 cc - this is the partial volume of the combustion chamber swept by all the pistons in a single movement from bottom dead center to top dead center. Bigger displacement volume usually means more powerful motorcycle engine and less miles per gallon. The engine displacement is measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or liters (l) and for BMW K1200S it is 1157 cc as per the specifications above.
- 157 mm ground clearance - this is the space between the ground and the lowest part of the chassis of K1200S measured in millimeters or inches. The lower the ground clearance the better the handling but on the contrary higher clearance makes the bike more practical on uneven roads and off-road.Bore and stroke diagram of BMW K1200S
- 79x59 bore and stroke - bore is indeed the size of the piston presented by its diameter and stroke is the depth of the piston measured from top to bottom. The stroke value actually represents the distance that the piston undergo in one stroke. The technical specification of BMW K1200S shows that its bore and stroke measures are 79 mm and 59 mm. Because the length of the stroke for this BMW engine is smaller than the diameter of the cylinder (bore) we say that K1200S has a short stroke engine.
- Compression ratio 13:1. Imagine an engine's piston is at the bottom of its stroke (step one) and moves up compressing the gas in the cylinder till it reaches its top position of the stroke (step 2). The compression ratio is the ration of the volume in step one over the volume in step two. To avoid engine knocking when compression ratio is high those motorcycles might be recommended to use premium fuel only. If you got a motorcycle with a greater compression ratio for its specific engine it is getting better fuel economy than it would if it had a lesser compression ratio.
- Shaft final drive: All three variations of the final drive (shaft, belt and chain) are perfectly doing their job and one of them is always preferable depending on the type of motorcycle and it can not really be said which one of them is the best as each one has its advantages on certain occasions. Bikes have been designed with all three variations of the final drive for many years and each of them has performed well for the purpose it's been used. The final drive of BMW K1200S is shaft.
shaft final drive of motorcycleShaft drives are well know from their use in automobiles. The same conception applies when they are used on motorcycles - clean look, smooth movement and minimum maintenance required. On the other had they are the most expensive among the three options and add weight to the motorcycle. Also it is a fact that some minor power is lost because of the moving gears implemented in their design.
- Liquid cooling system: heat management and biker's comfort are some of the major concerns for the motorcycle manufacturers. While air cooled bikes are better cooled while in motion, the liquid cooled motorcycles have pumps, radiators and fans to deal with the heat even at idle speed.BMW K1200S turn signals - replacement
- If you decided to fix the turn signals of your BMW K1200S yourself there is nothing to worry about as that is indeed an easy DIY task. Generally the motorcycle turn signals wires are color coded and disconnecting them is not a problem. The next step is to locate the bolts that hold them in position. Complete the installation of the new BMW K1200S turn signals by properly connecting the wires after they are securely mounted.BMW K1200S protective cover
The dimensions of the BMW K1200S are important when choosing a motorcycle cover. Please keep in mind that any additional aftermarket accessories can increase the dimensions of the bike. The cover length, width and height might need to be bigger if saddle bags, fairings or backrest have been installed on the motorcycle.
