Looking at the detailed specifications of both motorcycles BMW R1200RT and Ducati Monster 796 is a proper approach to determine which of the two is more likely to match your style of riding and to satisfy your preferences. When you know what specifications and features of a motorcycle will make you personally comfortable with it then your choice should be all about this criteria. A good way to narrow the circle of favourite bikes is to compare their technical specifications and select just a few that are really matching your style and needs. The most appropriate method of exploring them is to actually ride each of them or at least sit on them to see how they feel.

The bigger engine size of BMW R1200RT in comparison to Ducati Monster 796 doesn't mean that it is more powerful or better performing bike. The first of the bikes has a bigger compression ratio (12:1) which is economically better. It represents the relation between the biggest and the smallest volume in the combustion chamber while the piston is performing its stroke movement. The bigger compression ratio means better fuel economy comparing engines with the same displacement because the mixture of fuel and air in the combustion chamber burns more effectively.
Both motorcycles have the same fuel economy of 42 miles per gallon or 5.60 l/100km (liters per 100 km ride). When measured in mpg the fuel economy shows how many miles can be traveled with a gallon of fuel. Alternatively when measure in l\100km it shows the fuel consumption in litters per 100 kilometer trip.
front and rear tires The size of the tyres is specified by the producer for each motorcycle. Picking the proper type that matches your individual style of riding is very essential. You need to know what the code designators printed on the tire mean in order to be able to find the proper size for your bike. Firstly the code shows the width of the tire measured in millimeters. Both motorcycles BMW R1200RT and Ducati Monster 796 have the same width of their tires - 120 mm for the front tire and 180 mm for the rear one. The profile of the tire is revealed by the second number. And the third number indicats the diameter of the rim in inches. Since many internet stores are offering motorcycle tires it is an easy way to get proper pair of tires online at reasonable price.
The ground clearance of BMW R1200RT (155mm) is bigger than the one of Ducati Monster 796 (bbb2mm). The parameter ground clearance refers to the space between the ground and underside of the chassis and is also called ride height of a motorcycle. That, in other words, is the smallest distance between any mechanical body part of the motorcycle and the surface of the road.
BMW R1200RT appears to be faster than Ducati Monster 796 with top speed of 234km/h against 203km/h for the other bike. Sometimes of course motorcycle speed statistics may be contradictory from various sources.
As per their technical specifications both motorcycles have different types of final drive implementation.
motorcycle driven by chain The Ducati Monster 796is driven by a chain. Chain final drives are known for their simplicity and efficiency in driving power from the engine to the rear wheel of the motorcycle and are one of the most popular final drive options by far. However chains have their down points - more frequent need of maintenance (lubrication and cleaning) which means that a biker should always keep an eye on the chain especially in rainy days or dusty roads. The BMW R1200RT is driven by shaft.
Compression ratio 12:1 means that the volume of gas in the cylinder when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke refers to the volume of gas when the piston is at the top of its stroke as 12:1. The value of the compression ratio of Ducati Monster 796 is 11:1 based on the information in its technical data and for BMW R1200RT the ratio is 12:1. In other words it represents how tightly the mixture of fuel and air in the combustion chamber is pressed before the ignition. It plays a big role in engine efficiency because bigger compression ratio means better thermal efficiency and more mileage with the same amount of gas.
One of the most important aspects of the basic level of maintenance of a motorcycle is the engine oil. Engine oils are different types as synthetic, mineral, part-synthetic and they all come at their price and qualities. 3700 miles (6000 km) between oil changes is widely accepted rule. Synthetic oil can be changed less often though. The oil filter needs to be replaced too and that is usually to be done with the oil change. According to the technical specs the engine oil capacity is 3.8 litres for BMW R1200RT and 3.7 litres for Ducati Monster 796. When changing the oil it is advisable to put less than the specified oil capacity and to check the level. The exact amount of oil you pour in is to be judged by the current level shown on the oil level sight window or dipstick.
